E-commerce: Emergence to explosive growth
Emergence of e-commerce has been one of the key disruptions to the USD25tn global
retail industry. And e-commerce penetration is increasing rapidly and now accounts ~15%
of overall retail sales. This has led to creation of some of the largest companies in the world
such as Amazon, JD.com, Alibaba, Zalando, eBay and Rakuten.
E-commerce penetration is quite high in some advanced economies such as the US
and China at 20% and 41%, whereas developing economies are lagging. For instance,
penetration in India, Brazil and Indonesia is 5%, 11%, and 9%, respectively.
