THE NEW EDGE
India’s digital infrastructure is truly national
Almost a decade back, India’s digital penetration was limited to urban, upper middle class, English-speaking youth with
high disposable incomes. In the last decade or so, smartphone penetration, cheap wireless data prices, and emergence
of UPI and Aadhaar has laid the foundation of the digital highway across Bharat. India now boasts a staggering 650–
700mn internet users and 500–550mn smartphone users. An estimated 250–300mn online transactions – spanning
banking, train ticket booking (IRCTC), mobile recharges, P2P, online shopping and any other online transactions for
products/services – take place every day.
